The Rays have signed infielder Jorge Mateo to a major league deal, per multiple reports. Mateo was released by the Braves after hitting .240 this season, ESPN reported.
Yahoo Sports reported that Mateo is expected to fill a right-handed side of a second base platoon role while serving as backup shortstop, following an infielder Ben Williamson's likely season-ending hamstring strain. The Rays recalled right-hander Jesse Scholtens to open roster spots, per MLB Trade Rumors. Infielder Carson Williams and right-hander Michael Grove were optioned to Triple-A Durham. To create a 40-man roster spot for Mateo, the Rays designated right-hander Trevor Martin for assignment.
