Anthony Richardson has been named the Indianapolis Colts' backup quarterback, coach Shane Steichen announced Thursday. Richardson will back up starting quarterback Daniel Jones and sit ahead of Riley Leonard on the depth chart.
The move comes after Richardson requested a trade during the offseason. Despite that request, per NFL Trade Rumors, Colts general manager Chris Ballard decided to keep three quarterbacks rather than trade Richardson away.
Richardson, the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft, said he was grateful for the opportunity. "I'm thankful the Colts believe in me enough to make me QB2," he said, per multiple outlets. Yahoo Sports reported that Richardson "won" the backup job in competition heading into Week 1, though the sources do not detail who else competed for the role beyond Leonard.
