The 76ers opened their season with a 106-100 win over the Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday. New York raised its banner and handed out championship rings before the game. Yahoo Sports' coverage called it a night for a "star-studded starting five" and a "new-look" Philadelphia team that was happy to "be a little spoiler."
Tyrese Maxey led the way, and the box score backs up Yahoo's recap headline that he starred. He scored 28 on 9-of-19 shooting, made 8 of 9 free throws, and added three steals and three blocks in 40 minutes. Jaylen Brown had 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting, 8 rebounds and 6 assists, and was +17 in 35 minutes. LeBron James had a quieter scoring night, with 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting and 0-for-3 from three. He added 9 rebounds and 7 assists. Joel Embiid scored 13 with 11 rebounds and 3 blocks, though he shot 4-of-15. Yahoo's recap described James and Brown as posting "solid numbers."
The game was close throughout, with six lead changes. The Sixers took control in the third quarter, which they won 29-18. The Knicks cut into it late, and one Yahoo piece framed the result as a comeback that fell short, but they never got past the deficit.
Yahoo's explanations for the loss differ in emphasis. One piece said the Knicks looked drained after the emotional ceremony, with the headline quote "running in mud" and a "glaring" Philadelphia advantage. Another quotes Knicks coach Mike Brown on the team's poor attention to detail: "We put ourselves in the hole." The numbers fit both accounts only partly. New York won the rebounding battle 53-45, including 14 offensive boards to 6, and outscored Philadelphia in the paint 44-40. It also shot 37% to the Sixers' 42% and turned the ball over 14 times (15 counting team turnovers) to Philadelphia's 10. The Sixers had a 24-16 edge in fast-break points. Jalen Brunson had 21 points on 6-of-19 shooting, Karl-Anthony Towns scored 19 in 24 minutes, and Andre Drummond had 12 points and 14 rebounds. Mikal Bridges scored 4 and OG Anunoby went 3-of-12.
Philadelphia is 1-0 and leads the Atlantic, with a one-game streak. The Knicks are 0-1 on the night they hung the banner. The Sixers play again on Thursday, Oct. 22, at home against Cleveland, and host Milwaukee on Saturday. The Knicks go to Boston on Friday, Oct. 23.
