Jalen Hurts will not play for the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday against the Carolina Panthers because of a blood clot in his leg. The team announced Thursday that it is a "superficial blood clot" in his calf, ESPN reported. Hurts is out for Week 6.

The reports differ on how the clot was found and why he is out. NFL Trade Rumors, citing NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, quoted the start of an Eagles statement. It says Hurts visited the training room after practice on Thursday, October 8th, asking for treatment on his calf. The excerpt cuts off after that. SB Nation reported that the team is holding him out "due to an abundance of caution" after there appeared to be movement with the clot. Yahoo's Sean Leahy wrote that the issue was discovered last week while the Eagles were in London. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio said only that Hurts developed the condition last week. ESPN carried a separate Rapoport item with the headline that Hurts can't play until the clot situation is solved. The summaries we have give no return timeline, and none of them says what the team plans at quarterback.

Our game log shows Hurts played at Jacksonville on October 11, three days after the October 8 date in the Eagles' statement. He went 21 of 40 for 220 yards and a touchdown in a 19-17 loss. None of the reporting we have explains how that fits with the timeline, so it remains an open question.

Hurts has played all five of Philadelphia's games. He has 933 passing yards, 8 touchdowns, 3 interceptions and a 57.8 completion percentage, with 13 sacks taken. He also has 107 rushing yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Nobody else on the roster has thrown a pass for 0 yards this season except Andy Dalton, who has one appearance, no passing yards and an interception. That is the only quarterback data we hold beyond Hurts, and no outlet has named a starter.

The Eagles are 2-3, second in the NFC East, and have lost three in a row: 27-7 at Chicago, 24-20 to the Rams and the Jacksonville game. Across those three games Hurts threw for 153, 93 and 220 yards. That is the offense the team must now run without him.

Carolina arrives 2-2 and first in the NFC South, after a 32-26 win over Detroit on October 4. Before that the Panthers lost 21-18 at Cleveland and beat Atlanta 34-3. Sunday's game at Philadelphia is the next checkpoint. The next news to watch is whether the Eagles name a starter and whether they offer any update on when Hurts can return.
