June Jones, the coach and former quarterback best known for developing the run-and-shoot offense, has died at 73. Pro Football Talk and ESPN both carried the news. ESPN described him as a longtime college and pro coach who helped popularize the scheme. Deadspin reported that the Run & Shoot Ce... announced his death. The feed text cuts off there, so we can't name the full organization or say what else the announcement included.
CBS Sports, in a piece by Shehan Jeyarajah, put the most detail on his college work. It said Jones engineered historic turnarounds at Hawaii and SMU. It also said he mentored the record-setting passers Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan. The headline credits him with innovative offenses at SMU, Hawaii and with the NFL's Atlanta Falcons. A Reddit post on r/nfl identifies him as a former Falcons head coach.
The summaries we have don't include a cause of death, a date or place, or any statement from his family or from the teams he coached. They also don't give his career record. Our coaching archive has no entry for Jones, so we can't supply those numbers ourselves, and we won't estimate them.
The Falcons are 3-4 this season and second in the NFC South. They are on a one-game winning streak after beating San Francisco 29-20 on Sunday, Oct. 25. Before that they lost 31-23 to Chicago on Oct. 18 and 30-23 to Baltimore on Oct. 11.
Atlanta's next game is at Tampa Bay on Sunday, Nov. 1. {{game id=nfl_401873025}} None of the reporting we have says whether the Falcons plan any tribute to Jones. We will update if the club or the league says anything.
