Bears coach Ben Johnson initially called for a punt late in Thursday night's win over the Patriots. Kicker Cairo Santos convinced the coaches to let him try a 58-yard field goal instead, Pro Football Talk and Yahoo Sports reported. The kick was good and sealed the 30-24 win at Soldier Field.

The fullest account of the sideline exchange is a Reddit post of Santos speaking in the locker room. It is a single source, and we haven't seen the video. He said Johnson radioed special teams coordinator Richard Hightower on the headset and asked, "Does he want it?" Santos said he told Hightower, "I want it because I want to have y'all's back." So the decision appears to have gone from Johnson to Hightower to Santos, and the kicker's answer was the deciding input. The reporting we have doesn't say whether Johnson had a particular reason for punting.

ESPN's angle is that Santos left the game a savior despite a fourth-quarter miss he called "annoying." Our box score is consistent with that. He finished 3 of 4 on field goals and 3 of 3 on extra points for 12 points, and 58 yards was his long. A Reddit post citing the NFL says the kick was the third-longest field goal in Soldier Field history. Another post calls it a career long, and our 2026 game log supports that. His longest kick in the other regular-season games we hold was 50 yards, at Atlanta on Oct. 18 and against Minnesota on Sept. 20. He had 51 in a preseason game against Cleveland.

The make was a turnaround from recent weeks. Over the seven regular-season games we have, Santos is 11 of 15 on field goals. Four of those misses came in the last four games: 0 of 1 at Green Bay, 1 of 2 at Atlanta, then Thursday's miss. His previous three games before Green Bay were 6 of 7 combined. Johnson ending up with a kicker he trusted from 58 yards matters more given the miss earlier in the same game.

The win moved the {{team id=nfl_3}}

Bears to 5-2, second in the NFC North, with two straight wins since a 31-7 loss at Green Bay on Oct. 11. They beat Atlanta 31-23 before Thursday's game. Quarterback Caleb Williams's reaction to the kick is the subject of a separate highlight post, but no outlet we have quoted him.

Chicago has extra rest before its next game, at Seattle on Monday, Nov. 2. If another long attempt comes up there, Thursday's decision is the precedent.
