The Hornets will retire the No. 1 jersey of Muggsy Bogues on Feb. 11, 2027. The date comes from CBS Sports, whose Sam Quinn notes that Bogues, at 5-foot-3, is the shortest player in NBA history. Hoops Rumors' Luke Adams, citing Tim Reynolds of The Associated Press, reported that the team announced the plan Tuesday. The ceremony will take place at halftime of a game against the Bucks. Yahoo Sports described the opponent only as a February game.
ESPN added the franchise context: Bogues is the Hornets' leader in assists, steals and minutes. Our archive supports that. It has him with 5,553 assists across nine Charlotte seasons, 1989 to 1997 in our tables. His best average was 10.7 assists in the season we list as 1990, and he averaged 10.1 in 1994. In 1992 he had 170 steals, his highest single-season total in the archive.
Hoops Rumors also placed the honor in a sequence. Charlotte retired Dell Curry's No. 30 last season, and Adams describes Curry as Bogues' longtime teammate. Our tables show Curry's last season, 2002, at 56 games and 360 points. Bogues' last, 2001 with Toronto, was only three games and five assists. Both players finished elsewhere, but the two jerseys will now hang together in Charlotte.
The team these honors are happening around is off to a good start. Charlotte is 3-0 and first in the Southeast, on a three-game winning streak. It won 110-103 at Brooklyn on Oct. 21, then beat Miami 115-110 on Oct. 24. On Monday it beat Washington 110-103. Two of the three wins came by seven points and the other by five, so the opening run has been tight rather than dominant.
Next up is a trip to Detroit on Wednesday, Oct. 28. After that the Hornets visit Washington on Oct. 30. None of the reports gives details of the ceremony beyond the date, the halftime slot and the Bucks opponent. Nothing in the reporting says whether Bogues will speak or which other figures from the franchise will attend.
