Brandon Miller scored a career-high 39 points as the Charlotte Hornets beat the Washington Wizards 110-103 at the Spectrum Center on Monday night, per ESPN. Sportsnet put his rebound total at six and said Naz Reid added 18 points. Yahoo Sports had Anthony Davis leading Washington with 29.
Our box score fills in the rest of Miller's night. He shot 15-of-28 overall and 5-of-10 from three, and he added three steals and two blocks in 36 minutes. He had a game-high +16. Reid had 18 points on 8-of-22 shooting but also grabbed 12 rebounds. Davis shot 11-of-22 with 10 rebounds, and Trae Young had 22 points and 10 assists. Kyshawn George scored 20 off the bench.
Yahoo said the Hornets "won the field goal percentage battle" but also outrebounded Washington 54-41. The box score contradicts the first claim. Washington shot 48 percent (41-of-85) and Charlotte 43 percent (42-of-97). The Hornets won on volume and second chances. They took 12 more shots, and they grabbed 20 offensive rebounds to Washington's 10. Moussa Diabate had 17 rebounds, 11 of them offensive, in 35 minutes. Charlotte also led 10-4 in fast-break points and forced 14 turnovers while committing 11. Washington was called for 24 fouls to Charlotte's 15. Charlotte led by as many as 14 and was ahead for 82 percent of the game. The Wizards' largest lead was four.
The outlets also disagree on records. Yahoo has Charlotte at 3-1 and Washington at 2-2, and ESPN calls this Charlotte's third win in four games. BenchScout's tables have the Hornets at 3-0, first in the Southeast, with wins over Brooklyn (110-103 on Oct. 21) and Miami (115-110 on Oct. 24) before this one. They have Washington at 2-1, second in the division, with the Wizards' loss ending a short run after a 128-116 win over Milwaukee and a 124-120 win at Chicago. We rely on our own count here.
Miller's season line in our tables has not yet caught up with this game. It shows one game played and 33.3 percent shooting. That is not a fair read of him after a 39-point night on 53.6 percent shooting.
Both teams play Wednesday. Charlotte is at Detroit, and Washington is at Cleveland. They meet again Friday, Oct. 30, in Washington, and the Wizards will have a chance to answer the rebounding gap there.
