The Panthers have placed right tackle Taylor Moton on injured reserve. Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper called his return to the lineup "a short-lived one," and Yahoo Sports' feed carries the same line. Those two summaries give only the roster move.
ESPN has the fuller version. It reported that Moton will undergo season-ending ankle surgery and is also recovering from a fractured fibula in his left leg. Only ESPN has the surgery and the fracture, so the other two outlets' summaries don't confirm them. None of the reporting we have says when or how he was hurt, or whether the ankle and the fibula came from the same injury.
Our archive doesn't show how much Moton played this season. His last logged game is the Dec. 28, 2025 contest against Seattle, and his 2025 line shows 16 games played. That is not a measure of his value, since offensive linemen don't produce meaningful defensive numbers. We also can't say from our data whether he played in Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.
The timing is poor for Carolina's pass protection. The Panthers are 3-3 and first in the NFC South, but they come off a 43-13 home loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday. In that game, per the box score, Carolina gave up five sacks for 32 yards and lost four turnovers, two of them interceptions and two fumbles. It was outrushed 258 yards to 88.
Before that, Carolina had won two in a row, 25-14 at Philadelphia on Oct. 18 and 32-26 over Detroit on Oct. 4. The division lead now depends on a line that has lost its starting right tackle for the rest of the year, if ESPN's report holds.
The next test comes quickly. The Panthers play at Green Bay on Thursday, Oct. 29, on a short week. None of the reporting names a replacement at right tackle.
