Dan Campbell acknowledged the injury in his postgame remarks, saying Kennedy would likely miss time and that the team had hoped to avoid a long-term setback. The surgery requirement changes that picture. Kennedy, 30, went undrafted out of Bryant in 2019 and signed a three-year, $1.755 million contract with Detroit. He appeared in four games this season as a returner, recording nine attempts for 223 yards with seven fair catches and a long of 33 yards.

The loss cuts into Detroit's depth at return duties heading into a stretch where the team has won its last game and sits 3–2 after taking down Arizona. The Lions' next opponent is the Packers on October 25, giving the club two weeks to identify a replacement returner. Detroit will need to fill Kennedy's role on special teams while also addressing his spot on the receiver rotation.
