The Athletics have acquired outfielder Nate Eaton from the Red Sox for minor league right-hander Jareth Rayo, per MLB Trade Rumors. MLB.com's headline describes Rayo as an RHP prospect. Deadspin called it the first trade of the offseason.
The outlets credit different people for different parts of the story. MLB Trade Rumors says Bob Nightengale of USA Today first reported that Eaton had been traded to Oakland. It says Chris Cotillo of MassLive first reported that Boston would get a minor leaguer back. It also names Francys Romero of BeisbolFR as a source, but the summary cuts off before saying what he reported. Deadspin dates the initial USA Today report to Thursday. None of the material we have gives a reason for the deal or any other terms.
Eaton's 2026 season gives little to go on. He hit .160 with a .560 OPS over 24 games, with 8 hits, one home run and 6 RBI in 50 at-bats. He struck out 16 times and walked 8, which produced a .300 on-base percentage, and he stole 2 bases without being caught. His 2025 was better: .296 with a .731 OPS in 41 games and 9 steals. He has also pitched an inning in two different seasons, 2023 and 2025, and allowed no earned runs either time. He is listed as 29.
Boston finished 87-75, third in the AL East, and its season ended with a 9-2 loss at the Yankees on Sept. 30. Yahoo Sports framed the trade as part of a larger decision point, writing that Boston "must make some tough decisions before Monday." The summary doesn't say what the decisions are. Yahoo also asks "who's next on the chopping block?", so more moves may be coming.
Oakland went 64-98 and finished fourth in the AL West. It lost its last two games, 13-2 and 9-0 to Houston, after winning 6-5 on Sept. 25. Eaton adds outfield depth to a club with a lot of room to improve. Our data doesn't show whether he is expected to play regularly, and none of the reports say.
Rayo does not appear in our player database, so we have no statistics for him. The reporting also doesn't say where he played in 2026 or how the Red Sox rate him. The next thing to watch is Boston's roster decisions before Monday, which Yahoo flagged.
