The 49ers have agreed to acquire defensive tackle DeForest Buckner from the Colts for a 2027 fourth-round pick. Tom Pelissero was the first to report it, and ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport later matched the price. Pro Football Talk noted that Buckner is returning to the club that took him seventh overall in 2016.

Buckner is 32 and set to become a free agent in the offseason, per Yahoo Sports and NFL Trade Rumors. San Francisco is therefore paying a fourth-round pick for the rest of one season, unless it re-signs him. The reporting says nothing about an extension.

NFL Trade Rumors, citing Pelissero, added a detail the other outlets leave out. Indianapolis has cleared more than $17.7 million in cap space by trading Buckner and guard Quenton Nelson, and it is bringing back a third-, fourth- and fifth-round pick. The summary we have does not say where Nelson is going or which picks belong to which deal, so treat the pick return as part of a wider Colts sell-off. The Buckner price alone is the fourth-rounder. ESPN's headline calls Buckner a defensive end, and its text says he went "to the Colts," which is evidently a slip. Every other outlet lists him as a defensive tackle.

Buckner has played all seven Colts games this season. He has 31 tackles (11 solo) and four sacks, with no forced fumbles. Indianapolis is 2-5 and has lost three straight, most recently 16-10 at Minnesota on Oct. 25. The Colts sit second in the AFC South and visit Jacksonville on Sunday, Nov. 1.

San Francisco is 6-1 and leads the NFC West, though it comes off a 29-20 loss at Atlanta on Oct. 25. That is the 49ers' first defeat of the season. Before it they beat Washington 23-17 and won 32-29 at Seattle on Oct. 11.

Niners Nation's Kyle Posey wrote that Seattle trading for Buckner "might have sped up" San Francisco's thinking. No other outlet we have mentions the Seahawks in connection with Buckner, and we can't reconcile that claim with the rest of the reporting. The Seahawks are 4-3, second in the division, and coming off a 20-3 win over Kansas City.

The 49ers host Las Vegas on Sunday, Nov. 8, after Seattle visits Chicago on Nov. 2. That is the earliest Buckner could play for San Francisco, depending on how quickly the deal is finalized.
