The Giants are placing running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, according to multiple reports. Deadspin said general manager Joe Schoen confirmed the move Tuesday. Tracy was hurt in the Giants' 27-21 win at Houston on Sunday. Pro Football Talk's note on the move said only that the Giants "will not have their running backs for a bit." None of the reporting we have gives a return timeline beyond the IR placement.

NFL Trade Rumors, citing Pat Leonard, added a roster move: the Giants are signing running back Greg Desrosiers from the Chargers' practice squad to the active roster. ESPN was the only outlet to name who gets more work. It reported that Devin Singletary is expected to play a bigger role on offense. The NFL Trade Rumors summary also begins a note about Cam Skattebo, but the feed text cuts off before saying what it is, so we can't say what it concerns.

Tracy's role this year was modest on offense. He has 13 carries for 40 yards and a touchdown in six games, plus four catches for 52 yards and a score. At Houston he had six carries for 15 yards and a touchdown, and one catch for 2 yards. He was also a kick returner, with 7 returns for 207 yards this season, including a 55-yarder. He had two returns for 53 yards on Sunday. Our data doesn't say who will return kicks now, and none of the reports address it.

Skattebo is the lead back by volume. He has 98 carries for 418 yards and two touchdowns in seven games, a 4.3 average, and he ran 17 times for 124 yards and a touchdown against the Texans, with a long of 42. He has also put the ball on the ground this season. The box score data lists a fumble in each of his games, and one of them, at Washington, was lost. Singletary has 13 carries for 39 yards, and he ran five times for 41 yards and a touchdown at Houston. His 30-yard run there was his longest of the year. Desrosiers is the new depth behind them.

The Giants are 4-2 and first in the NFC East, riding a one-game winning streak. Their last three games were a 27-27 draw at Washington, a 34-27 loss to New Orleans and the win in Houston. Because the injury leaves the top of the backfield intact, the change is less about the starter and more about depth and special teams.

Next up is a trip to Philadelphia on Sunday, Nov. 8, a divisional game the Giants will play without Tracy. The reports don't say how many games he is expected to miss.
