Cardinals passing game plan will be a 'group effort' against the Browns

Sun Oct 17 2021 12:28:37 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Arizona Cardinals come into their Week 6 matchup with the Cleveland Browns with a lot up in the air due to COVID-19. With head coach and offensive play-caller Kliff Kingsbury out, Vance Joseph and Jeff Rodgers will split the head coaching duties.

Kingsbury has been able to meet with his team and coaches remotely since his COVID positive diagnosis to make as many game plans as possible. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Kingsbury is not able to be in communication with them during the game.

The Browns have already experienced a similar situation last year when head coach Kevin Stefanski. Unlike Arizona, Cleveland had a much clearer set of changes when Stefanski went out. Mike Priefer stepped into the head coaching duties, along with his role as special teams coach, while Alex Van Pelt took over Stefanski’s play-calling duties.

While the Cardinals split head coaching responsibilities, they are also planning to split offensive game plan and play-calling responsibilities between coaches and players, according to Albert Breer and Mike Garafolo:

With so many hands in the offense, it will be interesting to see if Arizona’s offense has continuity. With a short play clock, the Cardinals will need a clear vision for their decisions a play or two ahead of time while also trying to consult Kingsbury’s plans and those involved in the run or pass game decision making.

A lot is up in the air for Arizona. Will splitting responsibilities up help them shoulder the load or cause a disjointed team in Week 6?

Browns give punter J.K. Scott a tryout

Sat Oct 16 2021 23:21:21 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns are seemingly always making transactions to their roster. Saturday, they made a number of moves including signing offensive lineman Alex Taylor to their roster and elevating two from the practice squad for Week 6’s game.

With punter Jamie Gillan struggling much of the 2021 season, after a down 2020 season due to injury, the Browns may be looking for a replacement. Officially, the Browns worked out J.K. Scott for the punter position on Saturday.

Scott is the former Green Bay Packers punter that was drafted in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL draft. The former Alabama Crimson Tide specialist stands 6’6″ and has been looking for a home since the Packers waived him prior to this season.

For his career, Scott has struggled with distance and net punting (punt yards minus return yardage including touchbacks):

Among players with at least 100 punts, Scott’s average ranks 28th in the NFL since he entered the league.

Scott’s net average during his career is 39.20 yards per punt after he dipped to a net of 37.8 in the 2020 season.

Interestingly enough, Pro Football Focus graded Scott with a 77.9 grade last year which was good for the fourth-best punter in the NFL. According to PFF, Scott was tied for first with a hangtime of 4.57 in 2020.

It seems likely that Gillan is punting for his job in Week 6. A poor performance could see Scott added to the roster quickly. A good performance could stave off the competition unless Scott was overly impressive during the workout.

Greedy Williams, 2 Chargers fined from Week 5's Browns, Chargers game

Sat Oct 16 2021 20:12:16 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Chargers faced off six days ago but we are just now learning about fines. A day before the majority of Week 6’s games, one Cleveland player and two Los Angeles players have been fined for Week 5 actions.

Browns cornerback Greedy Willimas was fined $9,508 while Chargers receiver Jalen Guyton was fined $4,722 for offsetting taunting penalties.

The play that led to the fines came late in the fourth quarter with Cleveland clinging to a seven-point lead and Los Angeles driving. Guyton caught a pass for 21 yards when the interaction between the two occurred.

Derwin James had the largest fine from the game, $10,300, following him grabbing Kareem Hunt’s face mask. James did draw a penalty for the play as well.

The game was tied at the time and Hunt had just completed a 13-yard reception. The James’ face mask penalty tacked on an additional 15 yards. The Browns scored four plays later to take the lead.

Browns sign Alex Taylor from practice squad among several roster moves

Sat Oct 16 2021 19:51:52 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

Facing a rash of injuries heading into Sunday’s visit from the Arizona Cardinals, the Cleveland Browns bolstered the roster with some personnel moves on Saturday.

The most notable move is signing offensive tackle Alex Taylor from the practice squad to the active 53-man roster. Taylor rejoined the Browns practice squad after a stint with the Bears on Chicago’s practice squad this season. The 6-foot-8 Taylor spent 2020 with the Browns as an undrafted rookie out of South Carolina State, playing in one game.

Taylor will help as insurance for the Browns at tackle, where starters Jedrick Wills and Jack Conklin are among 10 players questionable for the Week 6 game. Regular backup tackle Chris Hubbard went on injured reserve this week.

The Browns also elevated two players from the practice squad for Sunday. Defensive lineman Sheldon Day and cornerback Herb Miller received the standard elevation to help with potential depth issues. Day stood out in the preseason and has several years of NFL experience. Both Day and Miller will revert to the practice squad after the game.

Cleveland also waived tight end Connor Davis from the team’s injured reserve list.

One move the team didn’t make: Jarvis Landry remains on the IR. He will not be activated for Week 6 despite being designated for return earlier in the week and practicing with the team.

Jarvis Landry will remain on IR and won't play in Week 6

Sat Oct 16 2021 19:29:18 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns will not get wide receiver Jarvis Landry back in the lineup for the Week 6 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. Landry will remain on the team’s injured reserve list beyond Sunday’s late-afternoon tilt at FirstEnergy Stadium, per numerous sources.

Landry has not played since injuring his knee in Week 2. The Browns designated Landry to return from the IR list this week, which started the 21-day clock to get “Juice” back on the field. But after a couple of days of practices, the coaching and medical staff determined that Landry, the team’s leading receiver in each of the last three seasons, is not quite ready for action.

The team needed to activate Landry by 4 p.m. on Saturday for the wideout to play on Sunday. It does seem likely that Landry is back for the Week 7 matchup on Thursday night against the Denver Broncos.

Kliff Kingsbury, two other coaches out for Cardinals matchup with Browns

Sat Oct 16 2021 12:15:33 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns will observe from the opposite sideline as the Arizona Cardinals deal with COVID-19 related issues. As we have reported all week, defensive end Chandler Jones is likely to miss the game due to his positive test.

Now comes word that the team’s head coach, and offensive play-caller, Kliff Kingsbury will miss the game due to a positive test as well. He will be joined by the team’s quarterbacks coach, Cam Turner, and defensive line coach, Zach Allen. All tested positive on Friday prior to the team flying out.

Based on NFL protocols, the Cardinals now enter “Enhanced Mitigation Measures” as defined in their protocols handbook. Those measures include daily testing for all players and staff and masking while indoors. The increased testing could create more problems for Arizona as the general protocol is weekly testing for vaccinated players.

The Browns experienced many of these issues in 2021 especially late in the season. Cleveland was without their wide receiver group for a game against the New York Jets, didn’t have their head coach for their first playoff game and had many practices canceled due to positive tests or close contacts.

According to Adam Schefter, the Cardinals are expected to “split” head coaching duties for Sunday’s game between their defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator.

According to The OBR’s Jake Burns, Arizona doesn’t seem to have anyone on the staff with recent experience calling plays to replace Kingsbury’s role on the offense. It is believed that Sean Kugler, the team’s run game coordinator and offensive line coach, will call plays. Based on information on the team’s official site, Kugler has never called plays at the college or NFL level despite being in the league for 20 years.

Things may have gotten tougher for the road team in Week 6, with the possibility of more COVID-related concerns prior to the game, but the Cardinals are still a very talented team. They will just be without a lot of leadership in Week 6.

Browns Vs. Cardinals: Final injury report with 10 Browns questionable

Fri Oct 15 2021 21:24:46 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals will face off in Week 6 at First Energy Stadium. The undefeated Cardinals travel to face the 3 – 2 Browns in a game of former teammates and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks from Oklahoma.

Cleveland has been struggling with a variety of injury issues the last few weeks including ruling RB Nick Chubb out for this week.

The Browns will have 10 players listed as questionable for the game:

  • Jadeveon Clowney – Knee/elbow
  • Jack Conklin – Knee
  • Myles Garrett – Knee/ankle
  • A.J. Green – Shoulder/knee
  • Kareem Hunt – Wrist/knee
  • Takk McKinley – Knee/ankle
  • Greg Newsome II – Calf
  • JC Tretter – Knee
  • Denzel Ward – Neck
  • Jedrick Wills – Ankle

Only Wills and Conklin did not practice on Friday from that group. Wills, Clowney and Newsome did not play last week while Conklin and Ward left the game early.

Jarvis Landry was designated to return from injured reserve on Friday but has not been activated. The team could activate him still for Week 6 but that is not certain.

The Cardinals also have a few injury concerns but none as major and a much smaller list. Chandler Jones seems likely to miss the game due to COVID-19 diagnosis while center Rodney Hudson and linebacker Tanner Vallejo were ruled.

After being limited earlier in the week, Kyler Murray is not on the injured list neither is DeAndre Hopkins who was ill this week.

Arizona lists five as questionable for Sunday:

  • Byron Murphy – Ribs
  • Marco Wilson – Ribs
  • Jordan Hicks – Toe
  • Kelvin Beachum – Ribs
  • Chase Edmonds – Shoulder

While inactives are not due until 90 minutes prior to the game, we could hear updates on some of the questionable players as early as Saturday. With Wills and Conklin not practicing this week, they are the least likely to play on Sunday.

We will keep you up to date as injury news is released.

Nick Chubb ruled OUT for Cardinals Week 6 matchup

Fri Oct 15 2021 18:24:46 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns have had a myriad of injury issues so far this season and those continue to impact the team going into Week 6. While concerns around offensive tackles Jedrick Wills and Jack Conklin and a variety of defenders still linger, a new injury has become front and center.

Running back Nick Chubb will miss Sunday’s matchup with the Arizona Cardinals due to a calf injury. Chubb had not practice this week due to the injury and was noted as out for the game early Friday afternoon.

With Chubb out, Kareem Hunt will, likely, care the load for the Browns top-ranked rushing attack. Hunt has been dealing with an injury this week as well but is expected to play. D’Ernest Johnson and Demetric Felton will back up Hunt.

Last year, Johnson had a big game against the Dallas Cowboys with 13 carries for 95 yards after Chubb went down early in the game.

With a run-first offense, an injured offensive line and Baker Mayfield still dealing with a shoulder issue, it will be important for Hunt, Johnson and Felton to carry a big load on Sunday against the lone undefeated team in the NFL.

Behind Enemy Lines: Cardinals expert weighs in on Week 6 matchup

Fri Oct 15 2021 13:41:13 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

In preparation for the Cleveland Browns Week 6 matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, we went Behind Enemy Lines with Jess Root of Cardinals Wire. We wanted to find out what the expectations in Arizona are for this game and what kinks in the armor might be present for the undefeated Cardinals:

Is there one thing the Browns can try to stop that will make a win certain?

The biggest bugaboo to the offense is big negative plays. When it stays on schedule, it is nearly impossible to stop. However, because Kyler Murray takes deep drops, he can be susceptible to the 15-yard sack. If the Browns get a couple of sacks or force a couple of big penalties, they can slow the offense. Also, like any other offense, turnovers are key. The Cardinals have been great about protecting the football and great about taking it away.

Is the undefeated record a big thing for the Cardinals coaches and players?

Yes and no. The message is clear and consistent. They want to be 1-0 every day and every week. Yes, winning every game is important, but they are not looking back or looking ahead. They have big goals for this year, but publicly, they have been very persistent about staying in the present.

If Chandler Jones can’t play, who will threaten the injury-limited Cleveland offensive tackles in passing situations?

We haven’t seen hardly anything from J.J. Watt off the edge this season. I don’t know if they will start this week, but Markus Golden will be the main focus, while Dennis Gardeck, who had seven sacks last season in only 93 defensive snaps, Devon Kennard and Isaiah Simmons will play on the other side.

Has cross-country travel had an impact on Arizona in recent years?

When the Cardinals have been a bad, subpar or even a mediocre team, they struggled back East, especially in the early time slot. This weekend’s game is obviously a late game, but they have been much improved since the start of Kliff Kingsbury’s time as head coach.

What do you predict the score for the game to be?

I think this is the game where the Cardinals finally take an L. They definitely can win, but they have to adjust to no Maxx Williams or Rodney Hudson. They now will likely not have Chandler Jones. I believe this will go down to the wire but the Browns are victorious, picking up a 27-24 win.

Cardinals defense struggles where Baker Mayfield thrives

Fri Oct 15 2021 00:23:07 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

As the Cleveland Browns prepare to welcome in the Arizona Cardinals for Week 6 discussion around Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield continues to burn. While the offense put up 42 points and over 500 yards, with zero interceptions, Mayfield’s lack of plays late in the game has some Cleveland fans frustrated.

With the undefeated Cardinals coming to town, the Browns may need to put up a big number on the scoreboard once again. Kyler Murray leads a high-powered offense with weapons galore in the passing game and Kliff Kingsbury has done a good job orchestrating the offense.

With Murray, Kinsbury and all of those weapons on the other side, Mayfield will likely have to put together a great game against the Cardinals defense.

Thankfully for Mayfield and the Browns, where the Cardinals defense struggles is where he thrives:

The heat map on the left is red where Mayfield completes more passes than the average quarterback in the NFL while the heat map on the right is red where Arizona’s defense gives up more completions than the average NFL defense. While not a perfect match, as the tweet’s author notes, they are very close.

Given that these are comparisons versus the average, it is fair to say that Mayfield thrives in places on the field that the defense he faces in Week 6 struggles. Will it be enough to overcome the home team’s injuries and the visiting team’s offensive firepower? Time will tell.

DeAndre Hopkins misses second straight practice

Thu Oct 14 2021 23:39:41 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

While the Cleveland Browns have issues upon issues with injuries going into Week 6, their opponent has some significant ones popping up this week.

As we covered, Chandler Jones is likely to miss Sunday’s contest for the Arizona Cardinals while Rodney Hudson will be out for the game, for sure. Kyler Murray was added to the injury report with an issue to his throwing shoulder that limited him in practice.

Thursday was the second practice in a row that star receiver DeAndre Hopkins missed practice due to an illness. While Hopkins has not been diagnosed with COVID-19, missing two practices could be cause for concern for the Cardinals.

With Arizona traveling east on Saturday, it will be interesting if Hopkins is able to practice on Friday and the team deems it healthy for him to travel the following day.

Without Hopkins, the Cardinals still have some very talented receivers with A.J. Green, Christian Kirk and Rondale Moore. None are capable of replacing Hopkins as the team’s true top receiver but Murray would still have a lot of talent to throw to.

We will get Hopkins, as well as Murray and Jones’, official status for Sunday on Friday afternoon and keep you updated here.

Myles Garrett decorates with a haunting display for opposing QBs

Thu Oct 14 2021 19:01:47 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

Myles Garrett showed off his festive side with an ominous message to opposing quarterbacks. The NFL’s leader in sacks decorated his Cleveland-area home with a ghoulish and hilarious warning.

Garrett placed headstones of opposing quarterbacks in his lawn, complete with names and numbers. He even had it custom-lighted to show off in the dark. At the end of the display is a giant skeleton looking like he just wrapped up a quarterback for a sack.

He added in the Chargers Justin Herbert after landing a sack in last Sunday’s game in Los Angeles. And there is room for more in the spacious lawn. Could Kyler Murray make an appearance on Garrett’s ghoulish lawn next after the Cardinals visit the Browns on Sunday?

Browns-Cardinals: 10 prop bets for Sunday's game

Thu Oct 14 2021 18:55:28 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns are off to a solid start to the season at 3-2, and here comes a golden opportunity to make a statement to the rest of the NFL.

Only one undefeated team remains in the league, the Arizona Cardinals (5-0), and they are coming to FirstEnergy Stadium for a 4:05 p.m. EDT kickoff on Sunday.

Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has 1,240 passing yards this season, with four touchdown passes and two interceptions. Arizona ranks eighth in the league in passing defense, allowing 214.4 yards per game through the air.

Even though the Cardinals are undefeated, the Browns are a 3½-point favorite at home, according to Tipico Sportsbook.

With all that in mind, Browns Wire presents 10 proposition bets for Sunday’s Browns-Cardinals game.

Cardinals injuries: Kyler Murray limited, OL Rodney Hudson out

Thu Oct 14 2021 13:53:12 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns face off with the Arizona Cardinals in a big Week 6 matchup. With the Cardinals coming in undefeated, the Browns have their hands full as they fight to avoid dropping down to a .500 record early in the 2021 season.

The story for Cleveland this week will be injuries. The team has a significant amount of starters who could be questionable for the game. While the Browns get the benefit of the home game, Arizona has played very well this season and could easily knock off an injury-riddled Cleveland squad.

The Cardinals have their own concerns with players being limited or missing Sunday’s matchup. We’ve noted the concerns with their top pass rusher, Chandler Jones, being placed on the COVID-19 list and his status for Sunday up in the air.

Now comes news that two important offensive pieces have injury issues. Rodney Hudson will miss the matchup in Cleveland due to rib and shoulder problems. The more important news is that electric quarterback Kyler Murray was limited in practice due to a shoulder issue.

Murray was seen getting medical attention on his throwing shoulder during last Sunday’s game. The Cardinals quarterback had an AC joint issue in the same shoulder last year which coincided with a drop in production late in the season.

While Murray was limited in practice, the expectation is that he will play on Sunday. How much his shoulder limits his ability to push the ball downfield could dramatically impact the outcome of the game.

Browns injury updates: Some practice, some sit but overall encouraging

Thu Oct 14 2021 11:42:41 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The list of players that have injury concerns for the Cleveland Browns is quite lengthy going into Week 6. Set to face off with the only undefeated team in the NFL, the Arizona Cardinals, the health of many of their players will be the biggest storyline heading into the game.

Last week, the team got linebacker Anthony Walker back but Jadeveon Clowney and Jedrick Wills wer unable to play. During the game, the team lost Denzel Ward early and Jack Conklin later. Greedy Williams got hurt but was able to finish the game.

This week is the first week that Jarvis Landry is eligible to come back off of the injured reserve. He hinted this weekend that he could be back soon but that they would play it safe.

Landry returned to the field on Wednesday but was limited to running on the side. He did not do any drills or team activities.

The Browns got good news with Ward, Williams, Wills and Greg Newsome II, who missed the last two games, practicing even if limited. For Ward, Williams and Wills, there was concern that their injuries would cost them multiple games going forward. Practicing on Wednesday is a good sign.

It wasn’t all positive. A long list of players did not practice on Wednesday:

As the week goes on, Cleveland is hopeful that many of their starters will be able to ramp up their practice intensity or simply return to practice. With three straight home games, the Browns have a chance to get on a winning streak but need to be healthy to do so.

Cardinals DE Chandler Jones could miss game versus Browns (COVID-19)

Tue Oct 12 2021 23:43:13 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns welcome the Arizona Cardinals to town on Sunday for a late afternoon game. The Cardinals are the lone unbeaten team in the entire NFL while the Browns sit at 3 – 2 a game behind the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North and two other teams for the top of the AFC.

Both teams are headlined by Heisman Trophy-winning passers from Oklahoma. Kyler Murray has inserted himself into MVP conversations early in the year while Baker Mayfield has had his ups and downs, including a shoulder injury, through the first games.

On the other side of the ball, Myles Garrett leads a hot-and-cold Cleveland defense with his league-leading seven sacks while Arizona’s Chandler Jones sits tied for fifth in the league with five sacks. All of Jones’ sacks came in the first game of the season and he’s only played in two of the Cardinals five games so far.

Jones could miss another game this week with the news Tuesday that he has tested positive for COVID-19. It is believed that Jones is vaccinated so he will only require two negative tests 24 hours apart to be activated from the COVID-19 list to play in Week 6.

With the Browns possibly being without their starting left and right tackles, both Jedrick Wills and Jack Conklin are injured, and their primary backup, Chris Hubbard, going on injured reserve today, not having to face Jones could be very helpful to the offense.

Much like Tyrann Mathieu in Week 1 for the Browns, we will keep you up to date with Jones’ status as the week goes on.

Browns place 3 on injured reserve, sign 2 to active roster and more moves

Tue Oct 12 2021 23:12:22 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns were quite active with their roster on Tuesday making a total of seven moves in total. While still awaiting injury news on a variety of starters, the Browns placed three players on injured reserve on Tuesday:

The Browns brought defensive end Joe Jackson back up from the practice squad after shuffling him around last week. The team waived him, signed him to the practice squad and elevated him to the main roster for the game on Sunday.

Cleveland also brought up fullback Johnny Stanton from the practice squad and signed him to the active roster to replace Janovich. Stanton was with the team throughout training camp and played well including carrying the football.

Continuing the returning Browns theme, the Browns brought back OT Alex Taylor to their practice squad. Taylor was on the Chicago Bears practice squad earlier in the year but with the team in training camp. A big, athletic body, Taylor still needs development.

Finally, cornerback Tim Harris was activated back to the practice squad from the COVID-19 list.

Expect Andrew Berry and company to continue to be very busy over the next couple of days as information about injuries comes out.

Data graph shows Jamie Gillan's struggles this year

Tue Oct 12 2021 14:45:26 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns have some issues to get figured out. Injuries are the primary concern at this point with many starters missing or leaving Sunday’s Week 5 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Being down to your fourth and fifth corners, your fourth and fifth offensive tackles and your third and fourth defensive ends could be a problem for any team. Hopefully all the test results come back in a good way for the team and players like Greg Newsome II, Jarvis Landry, Jedrick Wills and others can return sooner than later.

Another problem that may need to be addressed sooner than later is punter Jamie Gillan. Gillan’s gaff in Week 1 was costly for the team but his overall punting this season has left a lot on the field. He continues to struggle to get distance on punts that need it while struggling to land punts softly to allow them to be downed on the shorter ones.

We detailed Gillan’s struggles following the game.

A new data graph, which looks at EPA (Expected Points Added) for punters, shows how poor Gillan is punting compared to the rest of the league:

Pro Football Focus also has Gillan graded low, 26th punter in the NFL, through five games.

It will be interesting to see if Andrew Berry brings in punters to workout for the team this week in an attempt to replace Gillan after over a year of poor production from the position.

Watch Browns Takk McKinley plow over a blocker, hit QB

Tue Oct 12 2021 14:28:33 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

While the Cleveland Browns lost in Week 5, and the defense struggled mightily during the game, there were some positive plays to look at. Earlier today, we showed you the speed and closing ability of Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. The rookie’s elevation into the starting lineup and, this week, a full workload of snaps has been exciting to watch.

Somewhat lost in the bevy of injury concerns that impacted the Browns against the Los Angeles Chargers was Jadeveon Clowney’s injury. Initially on the injury report with an elbow problem, Clowney also may be dealing with a knee issue.

Clowney has been the perfect partner across from (and sometimes next to) Myles Garrett. Takk McKinley has supplied adequate pressure and good depth backing both of them up. In Week 5, McKinley stepped into Clowney’s starting role and played well.

On this play, McKinley plows over the right tackle and, even after a slight stumble, gets a strong hit on QB Justin Herbert:

McKinley’s pressure forced an incompletion and shows the explosive ability that garnered Andrew Berry’s attention. Berry attempted to claim McKinley multiple times last year before signing him to a one-year deal in free agency.

Despite the defense’s struggle and the team’s loss, it is exciting for Browns fans to see another disruptive defender step up with Clowney’s absence.

Appreciating Baker Mayfield's floor, recognizing limited alternatives

Tue Oct 12 2021 10:53:59 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns have searched for a franchise quarterback since Bernie Kosar. While Vinnie Testaverde, Tim Couch, Kelly Holcomb, Jeff Garcia and a whole host of draft picks have brought glimmers of hope, none have forged their name alongside the legends to wear the orange and brown.

When the Browns drafted Baker Mayfield, it was clear that he had intentions of joining that pantheon of Cleveland immortals and changing the fortunes of the franchise. His rookie season showed a lot of promise with the rookie touchdown record and some exciting victories. Year two was a mess with Freddie Kitchens’ mismanagement of the team making it difficult to analyze Mayfield’s future.

The hiring of Kevin Stefanski and Andrew Berry brought a whole new offense, one that had Mayfield under center for the first time ever, and a whole new set of hopes and dreams. The 2020 season fulfilled many of those hopes and dreams with the team making the playoffs and getting a road playoff victory. Mayfield put together a spectacular second half of the season and Super Bowl aspirations were born.

The 2021 season has been far from perfect for both the team and their quarterback. Cleveland has lost two close games that they, mostly, controlled throughout while Mayfield has had a couple of difficult games and wasn’t able to pull out either of those two losses against quality opponents.

In Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Browns passing game got rolling with 321 yards through the air. Mayfield’s late-game interception, while having his foot grabbed, was his lone turnover. A Jamie Gillan muffed snap could have changed the outcome of the game and the narrative around Mayfield.

In Week 5 against the Los Angeles Chargers, Cleveland’s quarterback didn’t turn the ball over, had two passing touchdowns and threw for 305 yards. A bad pass interference call and a lack of calls going the team’s way may have decided the outcome of the game and the narrative surrounding Mayfield five games into the season.

At this point, it is clear that Baker Mayfield is a good quarterback. That is his floor. Compare him to Kirk Cousins, Jimmy Garoppolo, Derek Carr or any other quality signal-caller in the league and you will find enough similarities.

At his floor, Mayfield has produced like the best young quarterback since Kosar (Testaverde was not a young quarterback, 30-32, in Cleveland).

Unfortunately for Mayfield, the Browns and fans of the team, he has not produced like Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson, contemporaries of his, or Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson, older veteran stars.

Whether Mayfield can ever get to the level of those six is complete conjecture. At this moment, he has not yet produced as they have over an extended period of time (read: at least two years).

Can Cleveland win a Super Bowl with this level of Mayfield at quarterback? Yes, they can. Would it be difficult? Given the six quarterbacks listed above still being in the league, very much so.

The problem for the Browns is that the alternatives are more likely to resemble their recent history of a quarterback graveyard than matching the elite of the elite in the NFL.

With a quality roster and good quarterback, the Browns are unlikely to be in a position to draft a top-flight quarterback in the near future. Bottoming out just to acquire one would just restart the process undertaken by Sashi Brown a few years ago.

Trading up in the draft, as San Fransisco did in 2021, could be feasible but finding a quarterback that can step into the elite category in their first two seasons (2022 and 2023) could be hard to find. For example, “generational” prospect Trevor Lawrence has struggled in his rookie season. It is more likely that a rookie or second-year quarterback is carried by a great team than to produce better than Mayfield is currently.

Finally, trading for an elite veteran is a possibility but one that comes with caveats. First, how much talent and draft picks must be surrendered to acquire the talent? Second, how much cap space will be needed to pay that quarterback immediately? Third, how long will it take for that quarterback to get comfortable in Stefanski’s system? Fourth, how old is that quarterback and how many years do they have left at a high level? Fifth, and most importantly, why is an elite-level quarterback available?

The more talent and draft picks given up to acquire a quarterback makes that quarterback’s job even harder and shortens the team’s window. While Mayfield has his fifth-year option on the cap next year, players like Deshaun Watson and Russell Wilson (the two most likely names to be bandied about) could cost double that amount. While Stefanski’s system isn’t overly complicated, Watson and Wilson have played in a lot of shotgun systems and would take a little time to adjust. Wilson is closing in on 33 years of age which could also shorten a team’s Super Bowl window.

Finally, why would an elite quarterback be available? Wilson may demand a trade, again, from Seattle as his only NFL team ever struggles to build around him. Would he accept a trade to Cleveland? How big of a contract would it take to get him to do so? How much would Seattle command to help restart their franchise? Watson’s legal issues, while still allegations, are troubling. Unless he is fully and totally cleared of the allegations, a team like the Browns may not be interested. Like Wilson, would he accept a trade to Cleveland? How much would Houston demand in return and could Watson negotiate an even bigger contract to accept the deal?

What we have seen from Baker Mayfield over the last year and five games is a good to very good quarterback. That is his floor level. That is good enough to win a Super Bowl but could be difficult with the elite passers found around the league. We do not know what his ceiling is, everyone is entitled to their own opinion and evaluation.

We do know, from the team’s history since the return, that finding a quarterback that is better than Mayfield’s floor is very difficult to do. There are ways to try to do so but none are certain and all could be costly.

Baker Mayfield may not be elite but he may be Cleveland’s best hope for a Super Bowl victory this season and beyond.

Watch: Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah's amazing closing speed

Tue Oct 12 2021 10:09:56 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns were not able to pull out a victory against the Los Angeles Chargers. Blame can be spread around to a number of decisions, calls or players but the defense, giving up 47 points, will take the brunt of the blame.

It wasn’t all bad on that side of the ball. A week after gaining 117 yards, on only 15 carries (7.8 ypc), Cleveland’s defense held Austin Ekeler to only 66 yards on 17 carries (3.9 ypc). They also kept him from breaking out on any long runs with his longest going for only nine yards.

One of the biggest reasons for the team’s success against the run was rookie linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah. While the Notre Dame product didn’t have his best game as a professional, he logged his most snaps (68) and showed his amazing closing speed on a number of plays including this one:

Having to fight through traffic, Owusu-Koramoah easily beats his would-be-blocker, the left guard, and flies to the ball hitting the running back near the line of scrimmage.

His ability to identify and attack quickly will continue to be an important trait as the Browns second-round pick becomes a mainstay of the defensive gameplan.

Browns Week 5 snap counts has a lot of fluctuations

Mon Oct 11 2021 11:52:38 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns fell to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 5 despite controlling most of the second half. The Browns had a number of important players out including starters left tackle Jedrick Wills, cornerback Greg Newsome II and defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, just to name a few.

The team also lost cornerback Denzel Ward and right tackle Jack Conklin during the game.

All of those injuries, as well as preferred personnel groupings, led to some interesting snap counts in Week 5. Even special teams were impacted by depth concerns.

In the end, the Browns failed to make a stop when they needed to and failed to make a play on offense when they needed to. Putting everything together, the team sits at 3 – 2 with the two losses coming to two very good teams in very similar ways.

Lets take a look at the snap counts for all three phases of the game:

Browns make some dubious history in Week 5 loss to the Chargers

Mon Oct 11 2021 04:02:46 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns wound up setting some remarkable and undesirable history in their Week 5 trip to Los Angeles. The Browns earned a couple of dubious places in the NFL record book in the 47-42 loss.

Per ESPN Stats & Info, the Browns became the first team in NFL history to lose a game in which they scored over 40 points and did not commit a single turnover. They were also the first team to top 40 points, 500 yards and zero turnovers and lose in the 100-year history of the NFL.

Teams with those metrics were 463-0 until the Chargers stunned the Browns with 47 points of their own.

In addition to the team stat, quarterback Baker Mayfield added to his inglorious distinction of being the only QB to ever lose more than one game where his team scored 42 or more points. This was the third in Mayfield’s career dating back to his very first start in 2018 against the Raiders, which Cleveland lost 45-42. It also happened in a 47-42 loss to Baltimore in Week 14 last season.

Browns Vs Chargers: Everything we know in Cleveland loss

Mon Oct 11 2021 00:49:50 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns lost a tough Week 5 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers in a game they seemed to have control of most of the second half. Cleveland was either tied or leading Los Angeles starting with six minutes left in the second quarter until they lost the lead with 31 seconds left in the game.

An exciting game, the Chargers won 47 – 42 at home against the visiting Browns.

In the end, 531 yards of offense wasn’t enough to overcome the 493 yards from the home team. The Browns ran the ball well and didn’t turn the ball over. The Chargers just threw the ball more successfully, Justin Herbert toss it 398 yards with four touchdowns, overcoming an Austin Ekeler fumble for the game’s only turnover.

A key bogus pass interference call changed the game.

Here are immediate takeaways from the Week 5 loss for the Browns:

Browns LB Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah rushed to hospital with throat injury after loss to Chargers

Mon Oct 11 2021 00:47:29 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

A very physical game between the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Chargers in Week 5 ended with one Browns player rushed to the hospital with a throat injury.

Browns rookie linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah was taken to a Los Angeles-area hospital via ambulance for further testing and observation of a throat contusion he suffered during the game. It is unclear when Owusu-Koramoah suffered the injury during the Browns’ 47-42 loss to the Chargers.

There is no word on if the team’s second-round pick will return to Cleveland with the team. Owusu-Koramoah had four tackles and a forced fumble in the game.

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was also taken to the hospital following that team’s loss to the Green Bay Packers with the same injury.

Browns burned by bogus pass interference call in loss to Chargers

Sun Oct 10 2021 23:42:13 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns fell to the Los Angeles Chargers in an epic shootout on Sunday. But the Chargers got a major assist from the officiating crew on a critical call that dramatically altered the game script.

Cornerback A.J. Green was flagged for a controversial (to be kind) defensive pass interference penalty on a Chargers fourth down. The interference on the play was quite clearly committed by Los Angeles WR Mike Williams. A drive that should have been over was instead boosted by the 33-yard penalty. Los Angeles would go on to score a touchdown.

It’s one of the worst calls you’ll ever see in an NFL game.

Don’t take my word for it. There are multitudes of people who will tell you how awful the call was in favor of the Chargers.

Browns Vs Chargers highlight: Browns answer late with Hunt TD run

Sun Oct 10 2021 23:00:27 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns face off with the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 5 of the NFL season. Both teams enter the week with a 3 – 1 record but the Browns go on the road with a lot of injuries impacting both sides of the ball.

The Chargers, on the other hand, are mostly healthy and playing some very good football early in the year.

Following a Los Angeles drive that was saved by a questionable defensive pass interference call, that looked more like offensive pass interference, Cleveland’s offense took the field with the game tied.

After a pass to Kareem Hunt on the first play, which also had a face mask penalty tacked on, Baker Mayfield handed the ball four times. Nick Chubb had a nice 24-yard run and Kareem Hunt finished off the drive with an eight-yard run for the Browns to take the lead once again:

The Chargers get the ball back with a little over four minutes left in the game looking to try to tie it back up.

The Chargers, on the other hand, are mostly healthy and playing some very good football early in the year.

After an early third-quarter touchdown, the Cleveland offense has struggled to get going while Los Angeles scored on two straight possessions including a long pass to Mike Williams again.

The Browns responded on the next possession as Baker Mayfield hits David Njoku over the middle. The tight end broke a tackle and took it the distance for a 71-yard score:

Cleveland went for two after the touchdown and used a play made famous by Patrick Mahomes with the role out, underhand tight end screen to Austin Hooper:

The Chargers, on the other hand, are mostly healthy and playing some very good football early in the year.

Cleveland scored twice in the last minute of the first half. First, Kareem Hunt took it in for a score on fourth down. Then, the Browns defense forced a turnover leading to a Chase McLaughlin field goal to end the half.

After winning the coin toss to start the game, Cleveland took the second-half kick-off looking for a third straight score. On the fifth play of the half, Nick Chubb took a handoff to the right side, picked his way through the line of scrimmage before stiff-arming a defender and taking it for a 52-yard score:

Chubb now has over 100 yards rushing for the game and the Browns have a 27 – 13 lead early in the third quarter.

CB Denzel Ward questionable to return in Week 5 (neck)

Sun Oct 10 2021 21:00:39 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns trailed the Los Angeles Chargers early in the second quarter after a long touchdown pass from Justin Herbert to Mike Williams. Second-year corner AJ Green was in coverage on Williams with second-year safety Grant Delpit seemingly failing to provide safety support over the top.

During that Chargers drive, the Browns announced the starting corner Denzel Ward was questionable to return due to a neck issue. Ward went out on the previous possession and went into the medical tent. He was seen on the sideline talking to his teammates following but had not returned to the game.

Cleveland is already without Greg Newsome II, the team’s other starting outside corner, due to injury. Greedy Williams stepped in for Newsome while Green has taken over for Ward at this time.

We will update here if Ward is able to return to the game. Behind Troy Hill, Williams and Green, MJ Stewart would be the Browns fourth corner.

The Chargers, on the other hand, are mostly healthy and playing some very good football early in the year.

After a great start to the drive with Anthony Schwartz’s return and David Njoku’s long tight-end screen reception, two penalties on the Chargers on third down kept the Cleveland drive alive. Baker Mayfield then found Rashard Higgins wide open for a touchdown:

The Browns take back the lead at 10 – 7 early in the second quarter. Down a few starters, the Cleveland offense has scored on both of their initial drives. Mayfield looks sharp, currently 5 for 5 passing for 81 yards and a touchdown.

The defense is also missing starters and needs to keep the Chargers from answering.

Following a long Los Angeles drive that gave the home team the lead at 7 – 3, the Browns took back over after a 30 yard return by Anthony Schwartz.

Tight end David Njoku took a screen pass for 31 yards to run his total to 62 yards on three receptions:

Cleveland continued to drive deep into Los Angeles territory as the first quarter ended. Until the last play of the quarter, Njoku was the only pass-catcher to have a reception. Donovan Peoples-Jones got in on the action with a 12-yard pass reception.

After a quick three-and-out possession for the Los Angeles, Cleveland took the ball 75 yards on 10 plays but had to settle for a field goal attempt after a sack on Baker Mayfield from Derwin James.

Former Browns OT Greg Senat has tryout with Colts

Sun Oct 10 2021 12:38:33 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns once were thought to have significant depth on their offensive line during training camp. Following the reduction of the roster to the 53-man version and due to injuries, that depth has been significantly depleted.

Starting left tackle Jedrick Wills will miss the Week 5 matchup while the team’s primary backup on the offensive line, Chris Hubbard, could miss the rest of the season.

Blake Hance is likely to get the start at left tackle this week with rookie James Hudson III backing him up.

That has led some Browns fans to wonder about some of the players that were with the team during training camp. For example, Alex Taylor was signed to the Chicago Bears practice squad a few weeks ago but could be signed to any team’s active roster.

Greg Senat had not been heard from since departing Cleveland including late this week.

Senat was one of the only free agents added to the offensive side of the ball this offseason. He was given a chance to compete throughout camp but failed to make the final roster.

The Browns placed Senat on injured reserve prior to the start of the season due to a knee issue but then released him in the second week of September.

With injury concerns of their own on the offensive line, the Indianapolis Colts had Senat in for a workout late this week.

The former college basketball player has continued to intrigue teams with his athletic traits but has only played in 10 games, all for Dallas in 2021, since being drafted in the sixth round by the Baltimore Ravens.

Browns make multiple roster moves Saturday

Sat Oct 09 2021 18:28:15 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

Due to injuries and Andrew Berry’s desire to make the team the best he can, the Cleveland Browns have been full of roster moves throughout the early part of the season. With five brought in for workouts on Friday, we can expect more moves to come next week as well.

Saturday, the Browns made multiple moves that impact their roster for Week 5:

  • LB Anthony Walker was officially activated from the injured reserve after being designated for return earlier in the week.
  • DE Joe Jackson, who was waived earlier in the week, was added to the team’s practice squad.
  • Jackson and S Jovante Moffatt were elevated from the team’s practice squad to the active roster for Week 5.

Neither Jackson or Moffatt are certain to be active for this week’s game but the moves give the team options depending on how their multiple questionable designated players react in warmups.

Jackson and Moffatt will revert back to the team’s practice squad following the conclusion of Week 5.

Walker’s return should bump Malcolm Smith to a reserve role and give the team more speed at the linebacker spot. With Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah producing well early as a rookie, Cleveland hopes pairing the rookie with Walker will give them the best defense possible against the run and pass.

Browns Vs Chargers Week 5: How to watch, listen and stream

Sat Oct 09 2021 11:43:10 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

While the Cleveland Browns season didn’t start the way they wanted, they have righted the ship and enter Week 5 of the NFL season with a 3 – 1 record. The Browns are still in position for all of their season-long goals as they sit tied for the best record in the AFC.

As head coach Kevin Stefanski reminds the team often, the primary goal is to go 1 – 0 every week. This week’s matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers presents with some extra challenges. Chris Hubbard may miss the season while Jedrick Wills and a whole host of Browns defenders are questionable to play in the game.

The Chargers are led by young QB Justin Herbert, a versatile passing game and a couple of studs on defense starting with Joey Bosa and Derwin James.

In what Cleveland hopes is a game to keep their momentum going, Browns Vs Chargers could be very challenging. Below are important game details about this Week 5 matchup. If you have questions about the game, reach out to us on Twitter @TheBrownsWire.

Browns OL Chris Hubbard expected to have season ending surgery on triceps

Fri Oct 08 2021 21:33:58 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns got more bad news on the injury front today. While dealing with starting left tackle Jedrick Wills ankle issue for weeks, the loss of backup Chris Hubbard had become more problematic as the weeks went by.

When Hubbard was first injured in Week 1, the Browns didn’t place him on the injured reserve creating hope that he could be back in a couple of weeks but would not miss three weeks.

Instead, Hubbard was ruled out for Week 5 earlier today.

Given the amount of games he has missed, the team would have benefited from an extra roster spot but placing Hubbard on the injured reserve.

Now comes news that the team’s primary backup on the offensive line is expected to miss the rest of the season due to his triceps injury:

With Hubbard out and Wills significantly limited, he did not practice all week, the Cleveland offense will be left with Blake Hance or James Hudson III at left tackle most likely in Week 5.

Wills ankle injury has not gotten better since initially hurt in Week 1 and could continue to be a problem going forward. With Hubbard’s injury, it will be interesting if Andrew Berry tries to make a trade for a veteran, quality backup tackle.

For now, the Browns go into Los Angeles with Wills questionable, Hubbard going on injured reserve and a lot of hopes riding on unproven backups.

Browns tryout five players on Friday

Fri Oct 08 2021 21:10:05 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns continue to look to upgrade their roster for the best fits for the short and long-term. The team made a number of changes this week including releasing LB Elijah Lee to make room for the returning Anthony Walker at the same position. The Browns also placed Nick Harris on injured reserve and signed Hjalte Froholdt, both on the offensive line.

Lee returned to the Cleveland practice squad for a day then was re-signed to the active roster to fill the spot available after the Browns waived DE Joe Jackson.

Today, the Browns have five players in for workouts:

  • OT Coy Cronk – Iowa
  • OT Evin Ksiezarczyk – Buffalo
  • OT Elijah Nkansah – Toledo
  • DB Luther Kirk – Illinois State
  • DB Nate Meadors – UCLA

Cronk was an undrafted free agent that was signed by the Green Bay Packers after this year’s draft. Ksiezarczyk was with the Minnesota Vikings this offseason after training camp with the Atlanta Falcons in 2020. Nkahsah has bounced around with a number of teams since being undrafted in 2018 including playing one game for Seattle that year.

Kirk was with the Vikings in 2020 and 2021 but was waived in early September of this year. Meadors has also been with the Vikings with three games played there between 2019 and 2020. Since then, he has been signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles with no games played.

None of the five were signed today but the team could make that move on Saturday or wait until Monday of Week 6.

For now, general manager Andrew Berry and his staff continue to turn over every stone looking for the best players for their team.

Browns Vs Chargers: Final injury report full of concerns for Cleveland

Fri Oct 08 2021 20:43:39 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns travel to Los Angeles to face off with the Chargers in a Week 5 matchup of quality teams. The Chargers have put together a quality 3 – 1 with wins versus Washington, Kansas City and Las Vegas. The Browns played well against the Chiefs but loss then reeled off victories against Houston, Chicago and Minnesota.

Heading into Sunday’s matchup, injuries for the visiting team are the big story. Against a quality opponent, the following are listed as out for Cleveland:

  • CB Greg Newsome II
  • OL Chris Hubbard

Newsome was expected to miss his second straight game but Hubbard, injured initially in Week 1, was expected to return by Week 4 or 5.

Instead, the Browns will be without their primary backup on the offensive line while still struggling with other injuries at the position. Just on that line, the following are listed as questionable for the game:

  • LT Jedrick Wills
  • C J.C. Tretter

Tretter did not participate in practice until Friday, when he was limited, while  Wills was not able to practice at all this week. If Wills can’t play, either rookie James Hudson III or Blake Hance are expected to start at left tackle. With Joey Bosa on the other side, that could be problematic for the Browns offense.

Jack Conklin was limited all week but does not have an injury designation going into the game.

David Njoku is the only other offensive player listed as questionable.

The defense isn’t clear from injury concerns following the flight out to California. Seven (7!) defenders are listed as questionable for the game:

  • DE Myles Garrett
  • DE Jadeveon Clowney
  • DE Takk McKinley
  • CB Denzel Ward
  • CB Troy Hill
  • LB Malcolm Smith
  • LB Tony Fields II

Of that group, only Garrett did not participate in practice on Friday after not participating Wednesday and being limited Thursday. The other six were limited in practice on Friday.

Odell Beckham Jr. (shoulder) and Malik Jackson (rest) are also listed on the injury report but do not have injury designations going into the Week 5 matchup.

Of note for Cleveland, QB Baker Mayfield is not listed on the injury report despite his reported labrum tear.

For the Chargers, RB Justin Jackson is listed as doubtful while CB Chris Harris Jr. is listed as questionable for the game. No other Los Angeles player has an injury designation going into Sunday’s matchup.

Browns-Chargers: Nine prop bets for Sunday's game

Fri Oct 08 2021 18:39:44 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns are off to a strong start this season, but a stern test lies ahead this weekend in Southern California.

The Browns (3-1) are scheduled to lock horns with the equally hot Los Angeles Chargers (3-1) on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. EDT in SoFi Stadium.

Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has 935 passing yards, two touchdown passes and two interceptions through Week 4. Nick Chubb leads the Browns with 362 rushing yards, and Kareem Hunt leads Cleveland with 121 receiving yards.

The Browns are 2½-point underdogs to the Chargers, according to Tipico Sportsbook.

With all that in mind, Browns Wire presents nine proposition bets for Sunday’s Browns-Chargers game.

Elijah Lee is back on the Cleveland Browns active 53-man roster once again. The Browns re-signed the linebacker off their own practice squad on Friday.

He fills the roster spot opened up when the team released veteran DE Joe Jackson on Thursday. Lee himself was released on Tuesday and quickly signed onto the Browns practice squad the following day. He will be eligible to play on Sunday in Los Angeles against the Chargers. Lee is one of the Browns’ top special teams performers.

Another linebacker, Anthony Walker, could return on Sunday as well. Walker is eligible to be activated off IR and has been trending towards being ready to play. The Browns have until 4 p.m. on Saturday to activate Walker, who has yet to play in the regular season. He was designated to return earlier in the week.

I was able to catch up with Jeff Risdon of The Browns Wire on Thursday to talk about some of the pressing issues facing the Browns as they prepare for a match-up of the AFC’s elite on Sunday in Los Angeles.

  • Is Baker Mayfield’s partially torn labrum in his non-throwing arm cause for his recent underwhelming play?
  • Will he be able to bounce back on Sunday?
  • What are the Browns going to do at left tackle?
  • Are they handling the Jedrick Wills Jr. injury properly?

The Browns defense seems to have gelled faster than we ever thought possible and is playing at a high level. Will it be enough against a red-hot Chargers team? We discuss all of it and more… Enjoy!

Every NFL team's MVP after the first 4 weeks of the season

Thu Oct 07 2021 21:00:42 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

There have been quite a few surprises through the first four weeks of the season thus far, with teams such as the Panthers, Bengals and Cardinals getting off to great starts. And although we’re only about a quarter of the way through the season, the top contenders have begun to separate themselves from the pretenders.

The same goes for the preliminary race for NFL MVP. There are some strong candidates that have emerged, including Josh Allen, Dak Prescott and Kyler Murray, and also some dark horses who could factor into the mix with a strong finish to the season.

At the quarter mark, we picked every team’s most valuable player through the first four weeks, and it hasn’t been all about the quarterbacks.

Browns release DE Joe Jackson

Thu Oct 07 2021 20:43:33 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns continue to adjust their roster as the season turns the corner to the second quarter. With Myles Garrett, Jadeveon Clowney and Takk McKinley getting the majority of the snaps ahead of him, the team released defensive end Joe Jackson today.

Jackson has played in all four games so far for the Browns but his snap count has dropped each week. In the first week, Jackson played in 10 snaps on defense but that dropped to five by Week 4. He did play in eight special teams snaps last week, his most of the season

His 2021 season was highlighted by his Week 1 sack of Patrick Mahomes.

The Browns also have Ifeadi Odenigbo on their active roster but he hasn’t played a snap this season after being cut by the New York Giants during final cuts.

The team did not announce a corresponding move to fill Jackson’s roster spot giving them the flexibility to sign a player off another team’s practice squad or to make a trade.

If needed, the Browns do have Porter Gustin and Curtis Weaver on their practice squad that they could either sign to their active roster or elevate for Week 5’s matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Baker Mayfield suffered partially torn labrum in Week 2

Thu Oct 07 2021 13:50:43 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

Ever since Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield left the team’s Week 2 win over the Houston Texans with an injury to his left shoulder, there have been questions about the exact nature and severity of the injury. Mayfield hasn’t missed any time after quickly returning to the game, and he’s been a full participant in practices. But Mayfield is indeed hurting.

According to a report from Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, Mayfield suffered a partially torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder during the win over Houston on Sept. 19th. The injury will not need surgery and Mayfield is expected to remain in the Browns lineup.

Mayfield has been wearing a shoulder harness ever since, and his accuracy has radically diminished since suffering the injury. He completed over 80 percent of his passes prior to getting slammed to the turf. Since then, No. 6 has completed just 53 percent in the two wins and has appeared to alter his throwing motion slightly to accommodate either the harness or the injury.

Browns Anthony Walker returns from injured reserve; Elijah Lee returns

Wed Oct 06 2021 17:44:32 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns are 3 – 1 on the young 2021 NFL season but have been far from perfect. They have also been far from healthy including multiple starters missing multiple games along with Jedrick Wills leaving all four games this year.

The team is starting to get healthier with Ronnie Harrison cleared from concussion protocol (never being concussed in the first place), Chris Hubbard likely to return to activity this week, Greg Newsom II possible to play in Week 5 and, now, the return of Anthony Walker.

The Browns designated Walker for return from injured reserve and are expecting their defensive play-caller to return to the field this week. Walker was the team’s leading tackler in Week 1 against the Kansas City Chiefs but went on injured reserve shortly thereafter.

With the minimum three games on the reserved list finished, Walker’s return was likely after the team cut Elijah Lee on Tuesday.

Within their announcement of Walker’s return, the team also announced that Lee was added back to their practice squad. A spot on the practice squad opened up after the Houston Texans signed receiver Davion Davis off of it and onto their active roster.

With Walker’s return, it will be interesting how linebackers’ snaps are split up. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah has played well in limited action but also has special teams responsibilities. Malcolm Smith filled in for Walker while he was gone and played well while Sione Takitaki and Mack Wilson have taken snaps as well.

Rookie Tony Fields III could see more time on special teams with Lee on the practice squad, unless the Browns elevate him for the game this week. Fields struggled with injuries throughout training camp.

OBJ, Mayfield and the power of explosive plays

Wed Oct 06 2021 13:57:51 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns have an explosive wide receiver in Odell Beckham Jr., a quarterback with some proven track record in Baker Mayfield and a play-caller capable of creating openings for the passing game to thrive.

Yet, so far, Mayfield and Beckham have not been able to connect in just over half of a season together under Kevin Stefanski.

Many have attempted to explain why it is but none will be able to find causality. Their relationship is good. Mayfield has enough arm and ability to get the ball downfield. Beckham doesn’t struggle to catch the ball. Stefanski is putting them in a position to succeed.

In the end, correlation does not equal causation. Mayfield and Beckham haven’t made magic happen in Cleveland but the Browns seem content to continue to give it more and more chances.

Why?

Explosive plays.

While Cleveland’s offense can get explosive plays from their run and screen games, Beckham gives the Browns another field-stretching dimension. Rookie Anthony Schwartz has to develop before he can be relied on consistently while Donovan Peoples-Jones has not been able to build on his exciting rookie season and breakout training camp.

Even the team’s quality tight ends, Austin Hooper and David Njoku, have minimal explosive plays.

That leaves Beckham as the team’s lone explosive playmaker on the outside.

How important are explosive plays? A new article breaks it down with a lot of detail but the base premise is not surprising: More explosive plays lead to more scoring. This graph gives a simple visual of that statement:

For the article, a traditional idea of “explosive play” is used: Runs over 10 yards and passes over 15 yards. The graph makes it clear, the more explosive plays you have, the far better your chances to score.

Beckham gives the Browns the best chance for more explosive plays per drive. Whether it is a deep ball, a quick slant with a lot of yards after catch or the dynamic receiver breaking tackles and pushing for extra yards, Beckham brings an explosive play dynamic that is lacking from the rest of the passing game.

Will Mayfield and Beckham ever make beautiful music on the football field together? Maybe not consistently but can they add enough explosive plays to make a difference? Cleveland seems bound and determined to find out in 2021 and for good reason.

Texans sign WR Davion Davis off Browns practice squad

Wed Oct 06 2021 13:06:58 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

As has been discussed, the Cleveland Browns roster will likely be in a state of constant flux throughout the 2021 NFL season. General manager Andrew Berry is always on the lookout for ways to improve his roster and give his team as many advantages as possible.

For example, the Browns added a big receiver to their practice squad this week, perhaps to help prepare them for facing Los Angeles Chargers 6’4″ receiver Mike Williams.

A problem for Cleveland is that other team’s general managers are doing the same thing. With the Browns quality roster and winning record, other teams will continue to monitor Cleveland’s moves and available players.

One such move just took place as the Houston Texans signed wide receiver Davion Davis off the Browns practice squad. Davis was a free agent most of the offseason before being scooped up by Berry. He had to serve a two-game suspension to start the season, then the team waived him before bringing him back to the practice squad.

With the Texans adding him to their roster this week, it is a slight surprise that they (or another team) didn’t just claim Davis when the Browns waived him. Davis did have a choice whether to sign with the Texans or stay on the Cleveland practice squad and took the chance to make an impact on their 53-man roster.

Browns sign OT Hjalte Froholdt from the Texans practice squad, place Nick Harris on I.R.

Tue Oct 05 2021 20:39:59 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

The Cleveland Browns have added another offensive lineman to the mix. The Browns signed Hjalte Froholdt from the Houston Texans practice squad.

Froholdt takes the place of reserve center Nick Harris, who is headed to the injured reserve list with a hamstring injury. Harris has played exclusively on special teams in the first four games, accruing 16 total snaps.

Froholdt was a fourth-round pick by the New England Patriots out of Arkansas. He is a native of Denmark. Froholdt primarily plays guard, seeing time at both left and right guard in 2020 for the Patriots.

The Texans claimed Froholdt off waivers from New England last November. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound Dane did not make the Texans final roster after the preseason and spent the first four weeks on Houston’s practice squad.

The Browns also released linebacker Elijah Lee with no corresponding move.
