The Carolina Panthers beat the Philadelphia Eagles 25-14 on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. Philadelphia played without quarterback Jalen Hurts. Pro Football Talk's Charean Williams wrote that the Eagles "missed him." Yahoo's recap said Carolina "played through a referee show" to win. The box score backs that up: Carolina was flagged 13 times for 149 yards, and Philadelphia 11 times for 84.
ESPN reported that Bryce Young threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns, both to Tommy Tremble. Chuba Hubbard ran for 120 yards and a score. Our box score has Young at 20 of 39 with no interceptions and two sacks. Tremble caught four passes for 46 yards, and all four came on four targets. Hubbard needed 28 carries for his 120 yards, which is 4.3 a carry. Carolina ran 33 times for 126 yards and held the ball for 34:48 against 25:12. The offense converted 7 of 17 third downs. Kicker Ryan Fitzgerald was 2 for 2 on field goals, including a 52-yarder, but made only one of two extra points.
With Hurts out, Tanner McKee started for Philadelphia. He went 26 of 45 for 215 yards and one touchdown, with no interceptions. Three sacks cost him 28 yards, so the Eagles averaged 3.9 yards per pass. The run game barely existed. Dameon Pierce scored but managed 35 yards on 12 carries, and Philadelphia ran only 13 times in total. DeVonta Smith caught seven passes for 75 yards and a touchdown on 14 targets.
Yahoo also reported that injuries stacked up late, and that Jordan Davis was the latest Eagles player to leave the game hurt. Davis had four tackles and half a sack before he left. Our data has him with 19 tackles and no sacks in five games before Sunday. None of the reporting we have says how serious his injury is or whether Hurts is expected back. ESPN's recap called the Eagles "injury-riddled."
Philadelphia is 2-4 and third in the NFC East, and has lost four straight. The last three losses were 24-20 to the Rams, 19-17 at Jacksonville and now this one. Two of the four losses were by a field goal or less. Sunday's was by 11 and was never close in the yardage.
Carolina is 3-2 and leads the NFC South, with two straight wins after a 21-18 loss at Cleveland on Sept. 27. Young now has 1,268 passing yards this season, and he averaged 7.2 yards an attempt Sunday against 7.8 for the season. The Panthers host Tampa Bay on Sunday, Oct. 25. The Eagles play Dallas on Monday, Oct. 26, and will need clarity on Hurts and Davis before then.
