49ers wide receiver Mike Evans left Monday night's 23-17 win over the Commanders after aggravating an Achilles injury. Coach Kyle Shanahan said afterward that the club doesn't think it's a long-term problem and is hopeful Evans can play Sunday at Atlanta, per Pro Football Talk.
The reporting changed as the night went on. Pro Football Talk's first item listed Evans as questionable to return, noting his three catches for 94 yards and saying his night "might be over." Sportsnet, carrying the Associated Press, then said he was ruled out for the rest of the game. Shanahan's comments, as quoted by Niners Nation, were: "Just the same thing that was bothering him all week. Just acted up during the game; couldn't go." The quote is cut off in the feed summary, so we don't have the rest of what he said.
ESPN added the most detail on the injury's history. It called the problem a lingering bout of Achilles soreness that kept Evans from practicing Thursday, Friday and Saturday. That would mean he played Monday after three straight missed practices. Only ESPN has the practice detail, and the other summaries we have don't mention his practice status. Niners Nation said Luke Gifford (groin) and Upton Stout (shoulder) also left the game.
Evans was productive before he went out. His 94 yards came on just five targets, and his longest catch went for 54 yards. That is well beyond anything else he had managed this season, when his previous long was 28. Across six games he now has 27 catches for 420 yards and three touchdowns, according to our game logs. He had 113 yards and a score on seven catches in the 32-29 win at Seattle on Oct. 11, and 76 yards the week before against Denver. He had no touchdown on Monday.
The 49ers are 6-0 and first in the NFC West with a six-game winning streak. Monday's win was their third straight by one score or less: 24-14 over Denver, then the three-point win in Seattle, then this one. Washington is 1-4 and was held to 53 rushing yards, though it passed for 261.
The next test is Sunday, Oct. 25, at Atlanta. Shanahan's "hopeful" is the only guidance so far, and no outlet we have gives a formal status. Evans' practice participation this week will be the first real indicator of whether the Achilles has settled.
