Steve Kerr said Stephen Curry is "fine" after the Warriors guard limped off the floor during Sunday's open practice at Chase Center, per ESPN. ESPN described the problem as a right ankle issue. Yahoo Sports relayed Kerr's message that it was no big deal, just a tweaked ankle.
The outlets describe the injury differently. Hoops Rumors said Curry slipped during a scrimmage and suffered a "right leg injury", citing Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area. It also said Curry banged the basketball against the floor in frustration, per ESPN's Anthony Slater. Golden State of Mind's Joe Viray wrote that no other player appeared to make contact before Curry hobbled toward the sideline. Viray also said Curry went back to the locker room, quoting Johnson's tweet that it was "real quiet" in the building. Yahoo's headlines range from "avoids injury scare" to "limps off court". Only Hoops Rumors framed it as part of worsening health problems for the Warriors. None of the feeds we have gives a diagnosis, imaging or a timeline beyond Kerr's "fine".
The scare matters because of Curry's recent availability. Yahoo's Ryan Young noted he played just 43 games last season, largely because of a lingering knee injury. In those games, per our tables, he started 41, averaged 30.9 minutes and shot 8.7-of-18.6 from the field (46.8%), including 4.4-of-11.3 from three.
The timing is the other issue, and the sources conflict. The practice reports call Wednesday's game at the Lakers the season opener. Our tables show the Warriors already 4-2 and first in the Pacific, on a three-game winning streak. That run includes a 128-118 win over Portland on Friday, a 101-89 win at the Lakers on Oct. 13 and a 111-106 win over Sacramento on Oct. 10. We can't reconcile those from what we hold, so treat the "opener" label with caution.
The Lakers are 2-3 and have lost two straight, including a 121-106 loss to Denver on Friday. Golden State's next game is at Los Angeles on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Curry's status for that game is the thing to watch, and Kerr's "fine" is the only word on it so far.
