The Atlanta Braves acquired right-handed pitcher Tyler Mahle from the San Francisco Giants on Sunday night in a one-for-one trade, the clubs announced. Atlanta sent reliever Anthony Molina to San Francisco in the deal.
Mahle, 31, is in the final year of his contract and set to become a free agent. Per ESPN, he is 3-9 with a 5.13 ERA and 89 strikeouts this season. MLB Trade Rumors reported that the Braves acquired Mahle to add mid-rotation stability behind Chris Sale. Yahoo Sports noted that Mahle joins Bailey Falter as veteran starting pitchers Atlanta has acquired before Monday's trade deadline.
The trade comes as the first-place NL East team deals with injuries in its rotation. Per MLB Trade Rumors, the Braves lost Reynaldo López to the injured list this past weekend.
