Dre Greenlaw was ejected in the second quarter of San Francisco's divisional game against Seattle on Sunday after headbutting Seahawks linebacker Ernest Jones, per ESPN. The confrontation began when Greenlaw chased Sam Darnold out of bounds along the Seattle sideline and made a late hit. CBS Sports reports that Jones was helmetless during the exchange, while Greenlaw was wearing his helmet. The ejection came under a relatively new league rule allowing the office to eject players for such infractions.
The incident capped an otherwise dominant day for San Francisco's defense. The 49ers improved to 4–0 on the season with a 21–13 victory, maintaining their lead atop the NFC West. Greenlaw had logged four games before the ejection, accumulating 34 total tackles—16 solo and 18 assisted—with one forced fumble. He had not recorded a sack this season.
For Seattle, the loss marked a setback after winning its previous game against the Chargers 30–23 on October 4. The Seahawks fall to 3–1 and remain in second place in the division. Darnold, who was the target of Greenlaw's late hit, has completed 45 of 69 passes for 560 yards and an 8.1-yard average through three games before Sunday's matchup.
The 49ers will look to extend their winning streak when they travel to Washington on Monday, October 19. Seattle heads to Denver on Thursday, October 15.
